NASHVILLE NEWSPAPER DOES 3 STORIES ON GREGORIES
The Friday morning, March 2, edition of Nashville's daily newspaper, the Tennessean, contains three stories concerning the controversial pardon of Ed Gregory, new owner of the Jim Reeves estate.
Again flunking "Journalism 101", reporter Kirk
Loggins never mentioned in his story that Gregory had any connection
to the Jim Reeves estate controversy, or that he had recently
been accused by Ames Davis, adminstrator of Mary Reeves Davis'
estate, of "conspiracy to
commit fraud." Surely, as any cub reporter would know, this
is a very relevant fact, especially since Gregory received a Presidential
pardon for a previous fraud conviction and is being hailed by
Hillary Rodham Clinton and her brother, Tony Rodham, as such an
upstanding citizen.
The rest of the story makes only brief mention of the various problems the Gregorys have had in the banking industry without going into any depth. This is ironic, since even the prosecutors who handled the cases against Ed and Vonna Jo, have been accessible to other reporters. Loggins says he tried to get a comment from the Justice Dept., to no avail. Will Kirk Loggins follow up and interview the appropriate legal authorities to find out more about the specifics of the Gregorys' fraud convictions? In a second story, the Tennessean gives a mini biography and tells how generous Ed Gregory is to the employees of his carnival company. It mentions his Navy service without delving into any of the interesting questions surrounding it, and notes that while his carnival business has grown by leaps and bounds, in 1993, a Dateline: NBC investigation noted irregularities concerning the games of chance on United's midway. The third article mentions some of the political contributions that Ed and Vonna Jo have made to both the Republicans and Democrats. It quotes Scott Harshbarger, president of Common Cause, a campaign finance reform advocacy group, as saying the contributions to Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Democratic Party are troubling in light of the President's pardon of Ed and his wife.
